HOW WE TEACH

Our Teaching Methodology

Catch 1

Students tend to get over-confident easily, especially when they have a good hold on the basic understanding of the subject. This increases their tendencies to be careless as they would aim to finish work fast, overlooking key details in their answering techniques that could cost them that significant 1 or 2 marks for excellence.

We act as the role to push the students to challenge themselves intellectually, cultivating them to have the habit of being meticulous with their answers. We challenge their answers in class, reminding them the virtue of constant upgrading in personal standards.

Catch 2

Rote learning is a core technique in our education system. However some students who partake on such learning journeys would find themselves struggling to achieve their academic expectations. They may get burnout easily from the constant practicing and would tend to have “study guilt” if they are religiously working on practice questions.

In such cases, we aim to understand each student’s capabilities and guide them to discover a studying style that is best fitted for them. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach as each student is unique, so is their studying abilities. Nonetheless it is paramount to have core topical understanding to proceed further. This is where we came in to practice with the students and craft out explanations in class. We also encourage students to keep in contact with us outside lesson hours to discuss and clarify any questions they might have when self-studying.

Catch 3

Studying is different for each individual. Some finds it easy, and some feels it is a great challenge.

Students gradually form a fear of topics when they are unable to understand as what they are studying and still advancing to further chapters as per their school’s curriculum, building up on the backlog of information they have to absorb.

These students are more suitable for consultation-based tutoring as more focus have to be placed on correcting interpretation errors and boosting conceptual understanding. our tutors keep a close contact with the student, encouraging them to ask as many questions during and outside of class.

TESTIMONIALS

What Our Students Say About Us

Home-based learning has been challenging for me as I am not able to fully keep pace with what was taught through pre-recorded videos. I am grateful that the online classes conducted by the teachers at MOST allows me to seek clarifications on the discussed topics immediately.

This has greatly enabled my learning to keep pace with my schoolwork. My tutor, Mr Ong, also went the extra mile to conduct extra sessions to ensure we fully grasp the concept, and a lot of help given when I am doing my homework. Thank you MOST for the constant motivation and support!

The main challenge I faced during home-based learning was that there were no question features to ask any questions that I had during pre-recorded virtual classes. MOST live classes have been very helpful as I get to connect with my tutor more to ask the questions that arise during school time while saving time on travelling. MOST tutors also gave me additional practice to complement my learning and assignments.

This has enhanced my topical learning and enforced my conceptual understanding during the circuit breaker period. Thank you MOST for going beyond to help me!

Mr Calvin is a warm-hearted and enthusiastic teacher! He is quick with replies on texts and is always patient. When he teaches, he would ensure that I fully understand the concept of the topic that is being taught. If I were ever confused, he would use multiple ways to explain to me, even if it took him more than 20 mins – just for one concept. (Yes, extremely patient and creative!)

He is also very passionate about teaching and would always do his best for his student. I used to be intimidated by physics questions and was unable to fully grasp the techniques to answer them. However after being introduced to Mr Calvin, I have learnt all the ways to best answer the questions and to ace them.

Mr Calvin has played an extremely important role in my life for Physics and I am really grateful to him and to the centre.

P.S. I called him at 7.30 AM just before my Physics EOY exam and he really picked up!
Thank you!

Mr Calvin is a very patient and friendly teacher. He makes Physics more interesting and when we have any questions, we can ask him anytime.

When I first learnt Physics, I really hated the subject but after joining Mr Calvin’s class, my interest in Physics grew. He also taught us on the important things to take note of which I did not learn in school and this helped me in my examinations.

Mr Joshua is an extremely dedicated and friendly teacher. Before joining his class, my chemistry has constantly fluctuated at S/E grade. Under his guidance, my H2 Chemistry grades improved tremendously from a S at Prelims to a B at A levels in only 2 months!

During classes, he designs his own curriculum in order to pinpoint our weak areas all the while maintaining the flexibility to adjust to different student’s needs. Additionally, he is very detailed in his replies when messaged him to clarify any doubts, making sure that I fully understand the concepts and leaving no grey areas behind.

He is a very proactive and devoted tutor and my only regret is not joining his class earlier!

Ever since primary school, Mathematics has always been my kryptonite, causing me much stress. After struggling for nearly 1 year in H2 Maths, I threw in the towel and decided to give Ms Daphne’s class a try after being recommended by a few good friends. Ms Daphne deserves a medal for the amount of patience she showed my friends and I. From the incessant questions, to the never-ending “I don’t get it, can you repeat this please”, we really were a handful as a class.

Actions speak volumes. Despite being busy, Ms Daphne always made sure that she put her 100% into answering our questions, even if it means answering our WhatsApp questions past midnight. She handwrites mathematics notes for us which were truly a life-saver when ‘A’ level examinations approached, so that everything was accessible at a glance. Ms Daphne really helped to solidify my weak mathematics foundation which caused me to struggle, and at the same time stretched my abilities through tougher questions that required higher order thinking.

Thank you Ms Daphne for making lessons at MOST a safe space for me to ask questions and for supporting us even beyond MOST 🙂

Mr Ong’s teaching methodology was pivotal in bringing up my Pure Chemistry grades from an F9 to A2 in less than a year. Even now, in Anglo-Chinese Junior College, I still find myself drawing back to these same methodologies when tackling questions. I am able to interpret, deduce and apply questions/concepts efficiently.

Thank you, Mr Ong!

Mr Ong is a very inspirational teacher to me. When I was in Secondary School, Chemistry was my hardest subject and my highest was E8. I was placed in the last class for Chemistry where I felt discriminated against and embarrassed.

I decided to go for Methodology of Studies Chemistry class. Mr Ong did something no teacher could have done. He made me love Chemistry so much and he kept the class engaging and gave unique and detailed advice on how to improve my Chemistry. He saw through my flaws in studying techniques and took concrete actions to make me understand what template answers I should use and how to use them for Chemistry questions.

I never regretted joining Mr Ong’s class as I got A1 for my Prelims and A2 for my ‘O’ Levels. I thank Mr Ong for all his efforts!

Ms Daphne is an engaging tutor with a pleasant disposition. She breaks down concepts into chunks that are easier to digest, and shares her own summaries of every chapter with us for our benefit.

Approachable and kind, she is also a friend to us who cares for our mental well-being apart from our academic performance exclusively. This results in an environment that feels comfortable and healthy for learning to take place.

Within the past 20 years of my life, the two most memorable teachers I have ever had are Ms Daphne and Mr Teo.

Initially, I struggled with H2 Mathematics and H2 Chemistry. However, after attending Ms Daphne and Mr Teo’s classes, I had grown to enjoy both subjects and realised that I had potential to do well.

Both Ms Daphne and Mr Teo’s classes are conducive to learn as they are safe spaces to ask questions. Apart from their classes, I rarely ever asked questions in school. Ms Daphne and Mr Teo embrace all kinds of questions, and are readily available to answer all of them – even WhatsApp messages late at night, or last-minute morning texts right before the examination paper.

The most admirable thing about both Ms Daphne and Mr Teo is that they are teachers beyond the classroom. They not only teach the respective subjects, but also give career tips, life advice and strong emotional support. Upon release of A Level results, they check in on students to reassure them that they are proud of them, and to give career advice moving forward.

Thank you to both Ms Daphne and Mr Teo for being my pillars of support and for having such a big impact on my life. I was only able to press on and come this far because of the both of you!
